Small Claims Court Limit Increase

Beginning on January 1st, 2020, the Ontario Government has increased the claim limit in Small Claims Court from $25,000 to $35,000. This is great news for the legal community as Small Claims Court is the easiest, fastest, and most cost efficient court in Ontario. It allows more people to spend less time in the courtroom and less money on representation. This is great for licensed paralegals who can now represent clients in Small Claims Court when their claims are higher than the previous limit. A quote from Attorney General of Ontario Doug Downey on the issue, “as a result of the change, more people will be able to file and respond to claims using less expensive representation, such as paralegals and law students, or through self-representation.” This claim increase will aid in the goal to improve Ontario’s legal system.
